BLOGS IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL
Blogs in the Science Classroom
Today in the suite 101 “Teacher tips training” website I read an article with some great tips from David R. Wetzel’s “Science Blogs in Middle and High School Classes.”

David discusses the advantages of blogs over websites, how to integrate what you would do in the traditional classroom into a blog, and some integration strategies and examples.
Some of the strategies he mentions, I hope to use in my own blog; for example, embedding relevant photos or video into the blog to enhance a lesson on photosynthesis. Some of the biology textbooks simply do not have images that I would consider ideal for my purposes.
I also like the idea of my students having access to valuable links which highlight scientific concepts and principles. A dynamic and interactive site which demonstrates chemical reactions, for instance, helps many students to understand an abstract idea.
One integration example David gives is for students who have been studying a unit on Biological classification of organisms and will be tested on the material. He suggests instead of using class time to review for the test, or wasting paper for a study guide, post the study guide on the class blog. He further suggests adding supporting websites, videos, and photos for students to review for the test. Adding a few sample test questions to the blog is also suggested.
One of the suggestions which David makes that I would use is having a blog space which provides extra help in the form of supporting video or websites for those students who may need it.
